EMERGENCY TIPS: SECURING ANTENNA TRIPODS

When mounting an emergency antenna on a tripod, be sure to place a bag of sand or other heavy object on the tripod cross support to stabilize the unit. During an emergency situation, people cannot be expected to exercise caution around portable equipment. All temporary antennas should be secured to prevent tipping due to wind or curious onlookers.

Be sure to tape a Yellow or Red HI VOLTAGE sticker to the tripod. Potential RF hazards should be identified just as any other hazard.

Attach a flashing LED lite to the tripod at eye level to provide additional visual indication of the presence of a portable antenna. A small flashing LED can be obtained cheaply or build your own battery powered flasher unit using a small P-box, LED flasher, battery and power switch from parts available from Radio Shack or other electronics parts vendors. Make sure the unit is water-proof.

Secure the coax run from the antenna to the operating position with a rubber rug runner or other means to prevent tripping by those with lazy foot disease. Emergency personnel transporting injured people do not need to be tripping over coax cables. Be prepared and reduce the potential for tripping on wires.
