OPERATING COURTESY: APRS WHILE TRAVELING

Having APRS equipment in your vehicle provides a neat method for others to track your current QTH. However, if you tune your transceiver to a repeater frequency, be sure to shut down your APRS equipment otherwise it sends out a periodic packet burst on the repeater frequency.

This is quite annoying to others listening to the repeater as they hear the packet burst as a loud squawk in their radios.

Some folks are hard of hearing and have their radio volume controls up loud. When a fully modulated packet burst hits the air it is annoying to others nearby.

So, if you plan on visiting another area or even traveling within this area, be sure to disable your APRS equipment before switching to a repeater frequency. This is common courtesy to the ham community.

A recent round of this type of activity was present on the 147.240 repeater. Lets be aware of the status of our mobile (and home) equipment.
